Despite having received the award, the Malacañang said that it was "not a slap" to the government because "no one has ever been censored in the Philippines". Mr. Roque, President Duterte's spokesman, quoted the article written by National Artist F. Sionil Jose.
"I have criticized Duterte but not on press freedom. The Philippine press is alive and well not because of Maria Ressa. No writer is in jail. There is no censorship. Duterte hasn’t closed a single newspaper or radio station."

Some agreed, Maria Ressa deserved the award. However, a week ago, an online petition was started in change.org.
